چکیده

GPS measurements collected between 1999 and 2002 in Marie Byrd Land, West Antarctica indicate no significant present motion between East and West Antarctica greater than 1–2 mm/year. Low strain rates imply that the Ross Sea rift is either inactive or active at a very low rate. This result indicates that the two subcontinents are likely joined as a single coherent lithospheric plate. They could have been joined since the end of Adare Trough spreading in Oligocene time. The volcanic activity in the Ross Sea sector at present such as at Mount Erebus is most likely related to mantle upwelling and not associated with continental rifting. GPS measurements of vertical rates indicate postglacial rebound of up to 12F 4 mm/year in western Marie Byrd Land (wMBL). Errors are scaled 1r. The rock uplift rates are consistent with postglacial rebound models of significant ice thinning in the eastern Ross Ice Shelf in the late Holocene. D 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A method for separating Antarctic postglacial rebound and ice mass balance using future ICESat Geoscience Laser Altimeter System, Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment, and GPS satellite data

[1] Measurements of ice elevation from the Geoscience Laser Altimeter System (GLAS) aboard the Ice, Cloud, and Land Elevation Satellite can be combined with time-variable geoid measurements from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellite mission to learn about ongoing changes in polar ice mass and viscoelastic rebound of the lithosphere under the ice sheet. We estimate the ac...

The Influence of 5000 year-old and Younger Glacial Mass Variability on Present-day Crustal Rebound in the Antarctic Peninsula

Assessment of Antarctic rebound is complicated by two issues: (1) The total ice volume at Last Glacial Maximum is contentious, with estimates ranging from just a few meters to several tens of meters of equivalent eustatic sea level rise. (2) The late Holocene mass budget is also uncertain. Space-based geodesy may provide important data in the coming years for estimating the recent ice mass bala...

Kinematics and segmentation of the South Shetland Islands- Bransfield basin system, northern Antarctic Peninsula

[1] New GPS measurements demonstrate tectonic segmentation of the South Shetland Islands platform, regarded as a microplate separating the Antarctic Peninsula from the oceanic portion of the Antarctic plate. King George, Greenwich, and Livingston islands on the central and largest segment are separating from the Antarctic Peninsula at 7–9 mm/a, moving NNW, roughly perpendicular to the continent...

Early Holocene mass-movements in southeastern Hudson Bay and their possible triggering by postglacial seismicity

Glacio-isostatically induced seismic activity is recognized to play a major role in triggering submarine mass-movements along formerly glaciated continental margins. Ice load removal is known to cause fault instability and generate many earthquakes in these regions immediately after deglaciation. With rates of forced regression of ~7 m/100 yr at time of deglaciation (8-7 ka BP), southeastern Hu...

The Earth's Mantle: Evidence of Non-Newtonian Flow.

Recent information from experimentally deformed dunite coupled with a reanalysis of data on the Fennoscandian postglacial rebound suggest that the rheological behavior of the upper mantle is distinctly non-Newtonian, and that the shear strain rate is proportional to the shear stress raised to about the third power.
